Getting your photos right
Photo sizes, slideshows, captions and the two mistakes that make a fast site feel slow.
Photos are usually the heaviest thing on a small business website, and the most persuasive. Both things can be true at once if you keep the files sensible.
Practical rules
- Upload landscape shots for hero areas and slideshows; portrait shots crop badly.
- Real jobs, real staff, real premises beat stock photography every time.
- Add a caption where the photo needs context — a location, a service, a before and after.
Two mistakes to avoid
The first is uploading straight from a camera without resizing. The builder compresses your uploads to WebP under 300KB automatically, which keeps pages quick on mobile data. The second is using ten near-identical photos in one gallery; three strong images do more work.
